A multi-year programme to expand the national gas transmission system, carried out by the transmission system operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. between 2009 and 2015. It built more than 1,200 kilometres of new high-pressure gas pipelines, 2 compressor stations and 41 gas stations, mainly in north-western and central Poland. The network included trunk pipelines on the Świnoujście–Szczecin, Szczecin–Gdańsk, Szczecin–Lwówek, Gustorzyn–Odolanów and Rembelszczyzna–Gustorzyn routes, forming the Polish section of the EU-supported North–South Gas Corridor and bringing gas from the LNG terminal then being built in Świnoujście into the national system. The investment programme was worth more than PLN 3.8 billion, of which about PLN 1.2 billion was European Union co-financing. The programme's summary coincided with the opening of one of the key pipelines on 5 October 2015.

Significance

The 2009–2015 programme substantially expanded the national gas transmission system (more than 1,200 km of new pipelines, 2 compressor stations and 41 gas stations) and created the Polish section of the EU-supported North–South Gas Corridor. Trunk pipelines such as Świnoujście–Szczecin and Szczecin–Lwówek enabled gas from the LNG terminal in Świnoujście to be received and carried further into the country, reducing dependence on supplies from a single direction and strengthening Poland's energy security and integration with the European transmission system.
