The International Congress Centre (MCK) in Katowice is a congress and exhibition venue built next to the Spodek arena, on the site of the former 'Katowice' Hard Coal Mine, in the post-industrial Culture Zone (Strefa Kultury) adjoining the seat of the NOSPR (Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra) and the Silesian Museum. The investor was the City of Katowice, and the design chosen for construction was developed by the Warsaw studio JEMS Architekci; the general contractor was a consortium of Warbud and Mercury Engineering. The contract with the contractor was signed on 3 October 2011, and construction began that same month; on 23 March 2015 the City of Katowice took over the building from the contractor. The first event held at the new congress centre was the Intel Extreme Masters esports tournament, which began on 12 March 2015. The cost of construction, co-financed with European Union funds, came to almost PLN 378 million, of which about PLN 196 million came from the City of Katowice's budget; in June 2011 the city took out a loan of PLN 254.2 million from the European Investment Bank, earmarked partly for this investment among others. The building's total floor area is about 38,000 m², and its main component is a multi-purpose hall able to seat around 8,000 people. In December 2018, the MCK, together with Spodek, was the main venue of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP24.

Significance

The International Congress Centre is one of the largest congress and exhibition investments completed in Katowice since 1990 and forms part of the post-industrial Culture Zone on the site of the former 'Katowice' Hard Coal Mine, alongside the seat of the NOSPR and the Silesian Museum. The building gave the Upper Silesian agglomeration a large conference and trade-fair space and became part of the transformation of central Katowice from former mining land into public space. In December 2018, together with Spodek, it served as the main venue of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP24, which was attended by more than 20,000 people from nearly 200 countries.
