LitPol Link (the power bridge): 400 kV Poland–Lithuania electricity interconnection, Ełk–Olita/Alytus
LitPol Link is a cross-border 400 kV electricity interconnection between Poland and Lithuania (on the Ełk–Olita/Alytus route), the first synchronous connection between the Lithuanian power system and the system of continental Western Europe, and an element in ending the so-called energy island status of the Baltic states. The interconnection allows the transmission of 500 MW of electricity; at the Alytus substation a DC insert (a back-to-back converter) was built to link systems operating at different frequencies. The international coordinator of the preparatory and construction works was the LitPol Link company, established in 2008 by the transmission system operators Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) and the Lithuanian Litgrid. Construction of the section on the Lithuanian side (in the Alytus area) began on 5 May 2014, and the interconnection was put into service on 9 December 2015. On the Polish side, as part of the project PSE built four power lines with a total current-circuit length of 602.2 km and five electricity substations, and expanded two further substations. According to an audit by the Supreme Audit Office (NIK), the total cost of preparing and implementing the Poland–Lithuania power bridge project was PLN 2,139,758.4 thousand (against a planned PLN 2,706,709 thousand), of which co-financing from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007–2013 and the Trans-European Energy Networks programme amounted to PLN 904,409.5 thousand.

Significance
LitPol Link was the first electricity interconnection between Poland and Lithuania and a key element in ending the energy isolation of the Baltic states (the so-called energy island) as part of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP). It enabled the transmission of 500 MW of electricity, increased the energy security of north-eastern Poland, and created the infrastructural basis for the later synchronisation of the Baltic systems with the continental European system. The Supreme Audit Office (NIK) assessed that the first stage of the project was completed on schedule and within the planned costs, achieving its planned objectives.
