The new seat of the Silesian Museum was built on the site of the former "Katowice" Hard Coal Mine, in the so-called Culture Zone in the centre of Katowice, next to the Spodek arena and the seat of NOSPR (the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra). The project's author is the Austrian office Riegler Riewe Architekten (Florian Riegler, Roger Riewe), who placed the museum's main exhibition section underground, leaving the revitalised, historic post-mining buildings on the surface. Construction of the new building lasted from 2011 (first works in March 2011, main construction from July 2011), finishing in June 2013; the new seat was officially opened to the public on 26 June 2015. The investment cost PLN 273,719,885 (in some sources rounded to "around PLN 274 million", while the value of the whole undertaking was estimated at over PLN 324 million), of which about 85 per cent was covered by EU funds from the European Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Silesian Voivodeship 2007-2013. The Silesian Museum is a cultural institution co-run by the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and has been described as one of the largest museum undertakings in the country.

Significance

The new seat of the Silesian Museum became one of the most important elements of the Katowice Culture Zone, a complex of cultural institutions (alongside NOSPR and the International Congress Centre) created on the revitalised site of the former "Katowice" Hard Coal Mine. The investment is cited as a model example of the transformation of post-industrial land, and, given the involvement of EU funds and co-management by the Ministry of Culture, also as one of the largest museum undertakings in Poland.
