Expansion of the grid-scale Opole Power Plant in Brzezie near Dobrzeń Wielki with two new supercritical hard-coal-fired units with a rated capacity of 2×900 MWe (around 1,800 MW combined). The management board of PGE Elektrownia Opole SA signed the contract for the construction of Units 5 and 6 on 15 February 2012 with a consortium of RAFAKO SA, POLIMEX-MOSTOSTAL SA and MOSTOSTAL WARSZAWA SA (the general designer and supplier of key equipment was GE Power, formerly Alstom Power); the net value of the contract was PLN 9,397,000,000 (PLN 11,558,310,000 gross). The order to start works was issued on 31 January 2014, and construction began on 15 February 2014. Unit 5, with a capacity of 900 MW, was handed over for operation on 31 May 2019, and Unit 6 on 30 September 2019; the official completion of construction was announced on 10 October 2019. The investor was PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. (PGE GiEK), and the units operate as part of the Opole Power Plant branch. It was the largest investment of its kind in Poland since 1989.

Significance
The construction of Units 5 and 6 at the Opole Power Plant (2×900 MW, around 1,800 MW combined) was the largest investment of its kind in Poland since 1989 and the largest investment in the Polish power sector during that period. After the new units were commissioned, the Opole Power Plant could cover around 8 per cent of national electricity demand, substantially strengthening the security of power supply in the National Power System. The investment was carried out by a Polish contracting consortium (RAFAKO, Polimex-Mostostal, Mostostal Warszawa) and was of major importance for the domestic power industry and the Opole region.
