The Green Unit is a 205 MW power unit fired 100 per cent by biomass (around 80 per cent wood chips and around 20 per cent agricultural residues), built at the Połaniec Power Plant in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship by GDF Suez Energia Polska. At the time of commissioning, it was the largest power unit fired exclusively by biomass in the world. Construction work on the fluidised-bed boiler began in November 2010; the unit was synchronised with the national grid in the autumn of 2012 and handed over for use at the end of 2012, with its official opening held on 5 June 2013. The investment was estimated at around PLN 1 billion (around EUR 240 million). The unit can supply electricity to around 600,000 households and is responsible for cutting CO2 emissions by more than 1.2 million tonnes a year compared with conventional generation. The unit's owner was initially the GDF Suez group (ENGIE); in April 2017 the Połaniec Power Plant, together with the Green Unit, became the property of the Enea group (Enea Elektrownia Połaniec S.A.).

Significance

At the time of commissioning, the Green Unit was the largest power unit fired 100 per cent by biomass in the world, and its output accounted for around 25 per cent of national electricity production from biomass. The investment was one of the largest single renewable-energy projects in Poland at the time, contributing to the country's commitment to generate 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. The 205 MW unit is able to supply around 600,000 households with electricity and cuts CO2 emissions by more than 1.2 million tonnes a year relative to conventional generation.
