A thorough reconstruction and modernisation of the historic Silesian Stadium in Chorzów (known as the Kocioł Czarownic, or Witches' Cauldron), a heritage-listed national stadium owned by the Silesian Voivodeship self-government (Urząd Marszałkowski Województwa Śląskiego). The stadium had been closed since autumn 2009, when the final stage of modernisation began, chiefly involving installation of the roof's cable structure. The main works were halted in July 2011 following a failure while raising the roof's cable structure: in 2011 one of the structural elements, known as the krokodyl (crocodile), responsible for the stability of the roof covering, which weighed over 220 tonnes, cracked, substantially delaying completion of the investment. The final cost of the modernisation came to approximately PLN 650 million. The new stadium, with a capacity of 54,378 seats, opened on 1 October 2017. The venue hosts matches of the Poland national football team, among other uses.

Significance

The reconstruction brought back into use one of the most recognisable national stadiums in Poland, the historic Kocioł Czarownic (Witches' Cauldron), as a modern venue for more than 54,000 spectators, owned by the Silesian Voivodeship self-government. Since reopening in 2017 the stadium has served as one of the venues of the Poland national football team and as a site for major sporting and cultural events in the region.
