New 900 MW Coal-Fired Unit at Rybnik Power Plant (EDF, abandoned)
A planned new power unit of approximately 900 MW (910 MW according to some sources), fired by hard coal with the possibility of biomass co-firing, at the Rybnik Power Plant in Silesia, owned by the French EDF group. The unit was to use supercritical-parameter technology with an efficiency of approximately 45% and to generate up to approximately 8–10% of its energy from biomass co-firing, replacing four older units. On 5 December 2011 Alstom signed a contract with Elektrownia Rybnik worth approximately EUR 900 million for the supply of equipment (a boiler with a coal-handling system and a complete machine hall: steam turbine, generator and auxiliary equipment). The total value of the investment was estimated at approximately EUR 1.8 billion over six years, and commissioning of the unit was originally planned for 2017 (later pushed to 2018). As a result of changes to the applicable law, the project was suspended indefinitely and was never carried out; at the same time EDF announced it would spend approximately EUR 300 million on modernising the existing units. A combined-cycle gas unit (Unit 9, 882 MW), intended to replace the coal units, is being built on the plant site.

Significance
