A new power unit no. 11 with a gross capacity of 496 MW at the Turów Power Plant (Bogatynia, Dolnośląskie voivodeship), owned by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. (PGE GiEK). The unit is fired with lignite from the nearby Turów mine and operates at supercritical parameters, achieving an electricity-generation efficiency of over 43 per cent. It replaced the three oldest units (nos. 8, 9 and 10). PGE GiEK signed the construction contract in 2014, and it was carried out by a consortium of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (leader, 55.38 per cent share), Budimex SA (22.31 per cent) and Técnicas Reunidas SA (22.31 per cent). Construction work began in December 2014, the foundation stone was laid on 29 June 2016, the unit was first synchronised with the National Power System on 21 December 2020, and it was officially commissioned on 14 May 2021. This was the last investment in the PGE Group involving the construction of a conventional fossil-fuel-fired power unit.

Significance

Unit no. 11, with a capacity of 496 MW, was the last investment in the PGE Group involving the construction of a conventional fossil-fuel-fired power unit. It replaced the three oldest units of the Turów Power Plant (nos. 8, 9 and 10), using the latest technologies: operation at supercritical parameters and an electricity-generation efficiency of over 43 per cent, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared with older-generation units.
