Construction of the northernmost, 16.07-kilometre section of the A1 motorway in the Silesian Voivodeship, from the Pyrzowice interchange (near Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport) to the Piekary Śląskie interchange, along km 442+500 to 459+200. The investor was the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA), Katowice branch, and the contractor was a consortium of BUDIMEX S.A. (leader) and Mostostal Warszawa (partner). The construction contract was signed on 27 July 2009, works began on 20 August 2009, and the section was opened to traffic on 1 June 2012. The value of the construction contract for the section was approximately PLN 1.5 billion net (nearly PLN 1.83 billion with 22 percent VAT). The investment produced a motorway with two dual carriageways separated by a median strip, two interchanges (Pyrzowice and Piekary), 19 bridge structures, access roads, and two rest areas.

Significance

The Pyrzowice – Piekary Śląskie section formed the northern part of the Silesian stretch of the A1 motorway (Pyrzowice – Maciejów – Sośnica), closing the motorway connection between the Upper Silesian agglomeration and Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport and further to the north. The route is part of the north-south corridor connecting the Tricity with the Czech border. The section was built as a motorway with a 2+2 cross-section with reserve capacity, together with the Pyrzowice and Piekary interchanges and 19 bridge structures.
