A1 motorway Sośnica (Gliwice) – Gorzyczki (the Silesian A1 section, via Świerklany)

The Silesian, southern section of the A1 motorway from the Sośnica interchange in Gliwice (connection with the A4 motorway) to the state border with the Czech Republic at Gorzyczki, with a total length of approximately 48 km, carried out by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) with co-financing from the EU Cohesion Fund. The investment was divided into three sections corresponding to three siting decisions of the Silesian voivode: Sośnica–Bełk (15.4 km), Bełk–Świerklany (14.5 km), and Świerklany–state border at Gorzyczki (18.3 km). The northern Sośnica–Bełk section was carried out under Stage I (total eligible project cost EUR 233.5 million, Cohesion Fund grant EUR 193.8 million, EC decision C(2004)5577) and opened to traffic on 23 December 2009; its first fragment, Sośnica–Rybnik (15.4 km), cost PLN 827 million (EUR 208 million). The Bełk–Gorzyczki sections made up Stage II (total eligible cost EUR 339.9 million, Cohesion Fund grant EUR 224.4 million); the Bełk–Świerklany contract, worth EUR 285.2 million, was signed on 7 August 2008 with the STRABAG / HEILIT+WOERNER consortium. On 30 November 2012 the section closing the route to the state border was opened to passenger traffic (with a temporary detour via voivodeship roads near the Mszana viaduct); a full, continuous A1 on this section was achieved after the opening of the Świerklany–Mszana fragment on 23 May 2014. The cost figure in this record is our own sum of the eligible costs of both stages (Stage I EUR 233.5 million plus Stage II EUR 339.9 million, approximately EUR 573.4 million), converted into zloty at the 2006 average annual NBP EUR/PLN exchange rate (approximately 3.8951). This is a derived figure combining two EU decisions from 2004 and 2006; the base price year (price_year 2006) was adopted following the dominant Stage II decision and is approximate.
