Construction of the final, over 18-kilometre section of the A1 motorway from the Świerklany interchange to Gorzyczki at the Czech border, closing the southern exit of the A1 corridor towards the Czech D1. Works began on 16 November 2007 under a contract with the Alpine company (EUR 272.7 million gross, approximately PLN 1.1 billion); after that contract was terminated in December 2009 at approximately 47 percent completion, GDDKiA signed a new contract with Alpine Bau in October 2010 for PLN 555.7 million gross, with a deadline of April 2012. The contractor abandoned the construction site, however, and the contract was ultimately terminated; the works were completed by Przedsiębiorstwo Usług Technicznych Intercor of Zawiercie (contracts worth PLN 55.4 million and PLN 49.8 million gross). The main problem was the MA532 motorway bridge at Mszana, the last structure on the route. The section was opened in stages: from 30 November 2012 with a detour via voivodeship roads around Mszana, and the last, over 7.2-kilometre fragment, together with the bridge at Mszana, opened on 23 May 2014. According to GDDKiA, the final investment amount was comparable to the value of the first (terminated) 2007 contract, that is approximately PLN 1.1 billion.

Significance

The Świerklany – Gorzyczki section closed the A1 motorway at its southern end, creating a continuous motorway connection with the Czech border and, beyond it, the Czech Republic's motorway network. The investment also became a symbol of the execution difficulties on Polish motorways: successive terminated contracts (Alpine, Alpine Bau) and a multi-year delay in building the MA532 motorway bridge at Mszana pushed the full opening back from the planned April 2012 to 23 May 2014. Despite this, the road, worth approximately PLN 1.1 billion, provided direct motorway transit across Poland's southern border along the north-south corridor.
