The first newly built section of the A4 motorway east of Kraków, 19.9 km long, between the Wielicka interchange and the Szarów interchange, forming part of the A4 Kraków – Tarnów route on the European east-west corridor leading towards the border with Ukraine. The investor was the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, and the contractor was a Spanish-Polish consortium made up of DRAGADOS SA and Polimex - Mostostal SA. The construction contract was worth PLN 839,328,570.79 gross. Construction started on 27 April 2007 and finished on 30 September 2009; the section's official opening took place on 29 October 2009, and drivers were able to use it from as early as 28 October 2009. The total cost of the task, including land purchase and other expenses, exceeded one billion zloty. The section is a free, dual-carriageway motorway managed by GDDKiA.

Significance

The Kraków – Szarów section was the first newly built fragment of the A4 motorway running east of Kraków and opened up construction of the A4 Kraków – Tarnów route, key to the European east-west road corridor (A4) towards the border crossing with Ukraine. It included 30 engineering structures (viaducts, flyovers, a wildlife crossing), and the road became a free element of the national motorway network managed by GDDKiA.
