Construction of the A4 motorway in the Tarnów–Rzeszów corridor, on the section from the Krzyż interchange (east of Tarnów) to the Rzeszów Wschód interchange, together with the associated section of the S19 expressway from the Rzeszów Zachód interchange to the Świlcza interchange. The project of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) was carried out as a single project co-financed from European Union funds (the Cohesion Fund, under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007–2013); the co-financing agreement was signed on 30 June 2010. Works on the main Dębica Pustynia – Rzeszów Zachód section began on 9 June 2010. The new motorway was built in stages: on 30 October 2013 drivers could use the section from Dębica to Rzeszów, and on 30 October 2014 the Tarnów (Krzyż interchange) – Dębica Pustynia section opened, closing a continuous motorway link from Kraków to Rzeszów. Under the contract annex, the completion date for the whole project was 30 June 2015. The main contractors included Budimex S.A. (Dębica Pustynia – Rzeszów Zachód section), STRABAG (Krzyż – Dębica Pustynia section), Mostostal Warszawa S.A., Eurovia Polska S.A. and Heilit + Woerner Sp. z o.o. The total project value was PLN 5,295,490,059.90, of which the maximum EU co-financing amount was PLN 2,969,050,618.42.

Significance

The A4 Tarnów (Krzyż interchange) – Rzeszów section closed a continuous motorway link from the Kraków metropolitan area to Rzeszów, cutting the Kraków–Rzeszów journey time by roughly half an hour. The motorway is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) east-west corridor, providing a connection to Germany (via the border crossing at Jędrzychowice) and to Ukraine (via the border crossing at Korczowa). The associated S19 Rzeszów Zachód – Świlcza section linked the new motorway into the region's expressway network.
