Construction of a new, approximately 51.4 km section of the A4 motorway from the Polish-German border at Zgorzelec to the Krzyżowa interchange (connecting with the A18 motorway) in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, carried out by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). The project was divided into two sections: "A" Zgorzelec – Wykroty (km 0+000 to 22+000) and "B" Wykroty – Krzyżowa (km 22+000 to 51+400). Construction contracts for both sections were signed on 9 November 2006, and works were carried out from 2007. The motorway was opened to traffic on 14 August 2009. The project was co-financed from European Union Cohesion Fund resources: the co-financing amounted to PLN 865,461,438.70 against a total project value of PLN 1,137,798,370.84 (the Cohesion Fund grant covered 82% of eligible costs). The section forms the western, border-adjacent part of the A4 motorway corridor linking Poland with Germany's road network.

Significance
The Zgorzelec – Krzyżowa section closed the western, border-adjacent part of the A4 motorway and connected Poland's motorway network with Germany's road network at the Zgorzelec crossing, creating a continuous east-west transit motorway link through Lower Silesia. It was one of the largest road projects co-financed from the Cohesion Fund in Poland under the 2004–2006 financial perspective, with a value exceeding one billion zloty. The new route took over transit traffic from the region's congested national roads and shortened journey times towards the border.
