Coastal Missile Squadron: first squadron with the NSM system (Siemirowice)

The Coastal Missile Squadron (NDR) was the first Polish coastal-defence unit equipped with the Norwegian NSM (Naval Strike Missile) anti-ship missile system from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The Ministry of National Defence signed the equipment-acquisition agreement with Kongsberg in 2008 (the first contract, worth approximately PLN 420 million gross, covered 12 combat missiles), and a 2010 option added a further 38 missiles, bringing the total to 50 NSM missiles. The squadron formally began operating on 1 January 2011 and was based at Siemirowice near Lębork, on the grounds of the 44th Naval Aviation Base. Its main armament was NSM anti-ship missiles carried on self-propelled launchers; the squadron's established strength included 23 off-road-chassis vehicles of Polish Jelcz manufacture, including 6 self-propelled launchers. Kongsberg and its Polish industrial partners (including PIT-RADWAR) completed equipping the unit in 2013. The cost of setting up the first NDR, with its base at Siemirowice, came to approximately PLN 900 million. On 31 December 2014 the squadron was disbanded, and the Naval Missile Unit was formed on its basis, officially beginning operations on 1 January 2015. Because the acquisition is dominated by the purchase of missile weaponry from abroad (Kongsberg, Norway) and contains no separately isolable Polish industrial outlay, the record serves as a strategic-visibility entry for the first pillar of coastal missile defence, and the stated amounts (approximately PLN 420 million for the contract, approximately PLN 900 million for the whole programme) are acquisition values, not Polish capex, which is why the cost is not counted in the 'value by stage' aggregate.
