The construction of a new tram line connecting the centre of Bydgoszcz with the Fordon district was the largest public-transport investment in the city's history. The new route, about 9.5 km long (with roughly 25 km of track laid in total), was built together with the reconstruction of Bydgoszcz Wschód station, where the construction of a tram viaduct required the railway station to be moved almost 400 m to the west. The investor was the special-purpose company Tramwaj Fordon Sp. z o.o. The construction tender was won by a consortium led by 'Gotowski' Budownictwo Komunikacyjne i Przemysłowe Sp. z o.o. with a bid of PLN 290 million; the construction contract was signed on 22 October 2013. Construction began in 2013 and was completed after two years: the first test run took place on 12 November 2015, and regular passenger service began on 16 January 2016. The investment was linked to the purchase of 12 new five-section, low-floor Swing trams made by Bydgoszcz-based Pesa. The total value of the project as a whole (construction of the line, purchase of rolling stock, reconstruction of Bydgoszcz Wschód station) was PLN 437,308,983.67 gross, including EU co-financing of PLN 209,768,552.18.

Significance

The tram line to Fordon was the largest public-transport investment in the history of Bydgoszcz. It connected the large, outlying Fordon district to the rest of the city's tram network with tram track, significantly improving transport links for this part of the city. Construction of the roughly 9.5-kilometre route was linked to the purchase of 12 new low-floor trams and to the reconstruction of Bydgoszcz Wschód railway station, where a tram viaduct was built and the railway station was moved almost 400 m. The project was carried out with EU co-financing (over PLN 209 million).
