The Dell computer factory at Olechów in the Łódź district of Widzew was Dell's second production plant in Europe, after Ireland. Dell announced the location of the investment in Łódź on 18 September 2006; the cost of the investment was put at EUR 200 million, and the plant received approval for regional aid of EUR 54.5 million. The first computer marked 'made in Poland' came off the production line on 20 November 2007, and Michael Dell held the factory's official opening on 24 January 2008. The production hall, with an area of about 37,000 sq m, assembled notebooks (including the Latitude and Inspiron), and was ultimately meant to employ as many as 5,000 workers by 2012 (at its peak it employed about 1,900 people). At the end of 2009 Dell, citing the need to cut costs, reached an agreement with Foxconn to transfer the plant, and the European Commission approved the takeover in September 2010; in the end, however, Dell withdrew from the transfer in June 2011 and remained the factory's owner. Until 2010 the plant produced laptops, and afterwards servers and desktop computers.

Significance
The Dell factory at Olechów was the company's second production plant in Europe (after Ireland) and one of the largest foreign direct investments in Łódź of that period, strengthening the city's position as a centre for electronics production and services. The plant shortened delivery times for Dell computers to Central European and Scandinavian countries. Despite an agreement, reached in 2009–2010 and approved by the European Commission, to transfer the plant to Foxconn, in 2011 Dell withdrew from the transfer and remained the factory's owner.
