Kormoran II (Project 258) is a series of Polish mine countermeasure vessels built for the Polish Navy, the first new mine warfare ship for the Navy since the 1990s. A contract for the construction of three Kormoran II-class vessels, including the prototype ORP Kormoran, was signed on 23 September 2013 between the Armament Inspectorate and a Polish consortium led by the Gdańsk shipyard Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., with the Naval Shipyard S.A. (Stocznia Marynarki Wojennej) and the Research and Development Centre Centrum Techniki Morskiej as members; the order was worth about PLN 1.2 billion. The vessels' hulls were built of non-magnetic steel. The prototype ORP Kormoran was built at the Remontowa Shipbuilding yard in Gdańsk: the keel was laid on 23 September 2014, the launch took place on 4 September 2015, and the vessel entered service (flag-raising) on 28 November 2017. This record covers Phase I of the programme, that is, procurement of the prototype under the 2013 contract; subsequent series vessels were ordered in later years under separate contracts.

Significance

ORP Kormoran was the first new mine countermeasure vessel built for the Polish Navy since the 1990s and the first vessel of the new-generation Project 258 mine warfare ships. The programme confirmed domestic competence in building naval vessels with non-magnetic-steel hulls and marked the start of the rebuilding of the mine countermeasure fleet; further series vessels of the Kormoran II class were ordered based on the prototype.
