LG cluster in Kobierzyce/Biskupice Podgórne (LG.Philips LCD / LG Display, LG Electronics)

The LG group's electronics cluster was established in the Kobierzyce municipality near Wrocław (Biskupice Podgórne, Bielany Wrocławskie) on the grounds of a special economic zone created in October 2005 to host LG's project for a European production centre for LCD televisions. The core of the cluster was the LCD liquid-crystal module factory of LG.Philips LCD (later LG Display Poland). On 9 September 2005 the Polish government and the LG.Philips LCD group signed a framework agreement on building a factory in Kobierzyce, with a total investment value of EUR 429 million (outlay planned through to the end of 2011), which was expected to create 12,000 jobs in the region. Construction began in the first half of 2006, and the first modules came off the production line in 2007; initial production capacity was 3 million modules a year, rising to a target of 11 million units by 2011. Alongside the LCD plant, the cluster also hosted LG Electronics facilities (producing televisions and refrigerators) and component suppliers; in November 2005 contracts worth more than EUR 290 million were signed for six further factories (including Heesung Electronics Poland, LG Innotek Poland, Dong Yang Electronics, LG Chem Poland, Ohsung Display Poland and Lucky SMT Poland). The investment site covered more than 260 hectares. The cluster made Poland a leading television manufacturer in Europe. In 2016 LG Electronics moved television production from Biskupice Podgórne to Mława, and a separate LG Energy Solution battery gigafactory was later built on the sub-zone site (a separate record).
