W-Z Route in Łódź (Retkinia–Widzew tram line, extended to Olechów)
The W-Z Route is one of Łódź's most important transport arteries, linking two large residential districts: Retkinia in the west and Olechów (Widzew) in the east. A two-year rebuilding, extension and modernisation of the tram corridor, together with the accompanying road layout, was carried out in 2013–2015. Reconstruction began on 1 October 2013, and traffic on the route was restored in October 2015. The scope of works covered 13.2 km of route, the construction of more than 17 km of new tram track, seven integrated public-transport stops and four transfer points; the tram connection was extended to reach, among others, the Olechów district, where the line was extended by around 4 km. According to Grzegorz Nita, director of the Łódź Roads and Transport Authority, the base value of the investment was PLN 747 million, of which co-financing from the European Union (the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment) reached PLN 532 million; additional works during the rebuild cost around PLN 25 million and were financed by the city. The investor was the Łódź Roads and Transport Authority, a municipal unit of the Łódź City Office.

Significance
The rebuilding of the W-Z Route was one of the flagship transport investments in Łódź under the 2007–2013 financial perspective, carried out largely with EU funds (the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment). The modernised east-west corridor, together with more than 17 km of new track, connected Łódź's two largest residential districts, Retkinia and Olechów, and brought the tram to the Olechów district, creating seven integrated stops and four transfer points that improved public transport in the city.
