Michelin Group investments in the tyre factory in Olsztyn (former Stomil Olsztyn)

The tyre factory in Olsztyn, formerly the Olsztyńskie Zakłady Opon Samochodowych Stomil (Olsztyn Car Tyre Works Stomil), was taken over by the Michelin Group in a privatisation process. On 2 December 1995 the then managing director of the Michelin Group, François Michelin, signed a privatisation agreement with the Ministry of Ownership Transformation in Warsaw, and the group acquired a majority stake (52%) in the Olsztyn factory. In buying the plant, the investor undertook to maintain employment and to invest at least USD 150 million. In 1996 the company began a three-year investment programme worth USD 151 million, modernising and expanding the plant. In subsequent years new production halls were commissioned (including for agricultural tyres and moulds), and in 2005 a further investment plan for 2005-2009, worth EUR 253 million, was launched. The group's total outlays in Olsztyn over the first 20 years (1995-2015) exceeded EUR 700 million, and according to 2025 data Michelin has invested around EUR 1.5 billion in the Olsztyn factory. The plant employs around 4,500 people, is the largest tyre factory in Poland and one of the largest plants of the Michelin Group worldwide; its hundred-millionth tyre was produced there in 2010.
