A full-scale modernisation of the roughly 100 km section of railway line no. 8 from Warszawa Okęcie to Radom, carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and co-financed under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020. The scope was divided into six tasks (LOT A-F) and settled under two main EU projects: "Modernisation of railway line no. 8, Warszawa Okęcie – Radom section (LOT A, B, F) – Phase II", with a total value of PLN 1,102,303,466.10, and "Works on railway line no. 8, Warka – Radom section (Lot C, D, E)", with a total value of PLN 843,229,447.19. Works on the Warka – Radom section included the construction of a second track and the rebuilding of the bridge over the River Pilica, while along the whole route track surfaces, stations and stops, the overhead traction network and railway traffic control equipment were replaced to raise the speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight. Rebuilding began in 2014 with the modernisation of the station in Radom, and works started on the Warszawa Okęcie – Czachówek section in 2015. Since 11 June 2023 trains on the entire Warszawa Okęcie – Radom section have been able to run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, cutting the Radom – Warsaw journey time to around 54 minutes. The combined value of both projects was around PLN 1.9 billion, although public announcements put the value of POIiŚ co-financing at around PLN 1.7 billion.

Significance

The modernisation cut the journey time on the Warsaw – Radom route (around 54 minutes on completion of the works) by raising the maximum speed to 160 km/h. The construction of a second track on the Warka – Radom section and the rebuilding of the bridge over the Pilica increased the capacity and reliability of line no. 8, which forms part of the Warsaw – Radom – Kielce – Kraków rail corridor.
