Modernisation of railway line E59, Wrocław – Poznań section (line no. 271)
A full-scale, multi-stage modernisation of the trunk railway line no. 271 Wrocław – Poznań (part of the international E59 corridor), carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and co-financed from European Union funds (the Cohesion Fund / the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) instrument, and the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment). The route is over 160 km long. The aim of the works was to bring the line up to a speed of 160 km/h in passenger traffic and 120 km/h in freight traffic, with part of the infrastructure prepared for an eventual 200 km/h. The modernisation was carried out in successive stages: Wrocław – the border of the Dolnośląskie voivodeship, the border of the Dolnośląskie voivodeship – Czempiń (with the Rawicz – Leszno and Czempiń – Rawicz sections), and Czempiń – Poznań (stage III, section no. 271, km 131-163). According to PKP PLK, spending on the modernisation of line no. 271 from the start of 2016 to the end of 2021 totalled PLN 1,704.9 million. The flagship stage, the border of the Dolnośląskie voivodeship – Czempiń, had a total cost of around PLN 1.5 billion (of which around PLN 1.2 billion came from EU funds), and the contract for the Rawicz – Leszno section was signed in 2017 for PLN 355 million net. Completion of the whole project was originally announced for 2012, then 2014 and 2020; the works were delayed, among other things, by the withdrawal of the contractor Astaldi in 2018. The main works on the last, problematic section, the border of Lower Silesia – Czempiń, were completed at the turn of 2022 and 2023, thanks to which the fastest train (the IC Heweliusz) covers the Wrocław – Poznań route in 1 hour 23 minutes (previously around 2 hours 20 minutes). The shorter Czempiń – Poznań section (stage III) was still being completed in 2023.

Significance
The modernisation of line no. 271 cut the journey time of the fastest trains between Wrocław and Poznań from around 2 hours 20 minutes to 1 hour 23 minutes and raised the maximum speed to 160 km/h in passenger traffic. The line is the Polish section of the international E59 rail corridor, linking Scandinavia with Central Europe, and forms part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The investment also improved parameters for freight traffic (up to 120 km/h) and safety, through new traffic control systems and station rebuilding.
