A multi-stage modernisation of the trunk railway line linking Warsaw with Łódź (railway line no. 1, Warszawa Zachodnia – Koluszki, and no. 17, Łódź Widzew – Koluszki), carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. with co-financing from European Union funds. The basic aim was to bring the route up to a speed of 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains. The modernisation was carried out in two stages. Stage I covered the Skierniewice – Łódź Widzew section; according to the EU Subsidy Map, the value of the project "Modernisation of railway line Warsaw-Łódź, stage I, Skierniewice Łódź Widzew section" was PLN 1,112,471,766.00, including EU co-financing of PLN 676,890,729.10, with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. as beneficiary. Stage II covered the Warszawa Zachodnia – Skierniewice (Miedniewice) section, around 58 km of line no. 1 from km 3.900 to km 61.350. On 26 May 2010 PKP PLK signed a contract for the stage II works worth PLN 870,000,000 net (PLN 1,061,400,000 gross). The stage II works were carried out divided into lots (including Lot A on the Warszawa Zachodnia – Miedniewice section and Lot C covering the remaining works) and into phases under the EU 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 financial perspectives; the remaining works were settled under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. The scope of the works included the rebuilding of track geometry, replacement of the overhead traction network, rebuilding of platforms, elimination of level crossings, construction of grade-separated crossings, local traffic control centres (including LCS Skierniewice on the section of line no. 1 between Żyrardów and Koluszki) and the installation of the ERTMS/ETCS level 2 and GSM-R systems. In 2016 PKP PLK announced completion of the project for June 2018, and settlement phases under POIiŚ 2014-2020 continued in subsequent years. The investment does not include the separate mega-project for the Łódź Fabryczna station and tunnel (covered as a separate record).

Significance

The modernisation of one of the most important and most heavily used trunk railway lines in Poland cut the journey time between Warsaw and Łódź and raised the maximum speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains. The Warsaw – Łódź route is an important link between the two largest agglomerations in central Poland, and its modernisation, together with the installation of ERTMS/ETCS and GSM-R, improved the line's safety, punctuality and capacity as well as its interoperability within the European network.

Independence is counted the same way the gate that admits a record counts it: subdomains and titles from one publisher are a single voice, Wikipedia is zero. That is why the number is lower than the number of links. Three is the minimum.
