Purchase of 20 Pesa Dart ED161 electric multiple units for PKP Intercity
On 23 May 2014, PKP Intercity S.A. and Pojazdy Szynowe Pesa Bydgoszcz S.A. signed a contract for the purchase of 20 Pesa Dart electric multiple units (series designation ED161). The value of the contract was PLN 1,320,626,400, of which PLN 1,008,600,000 was for the delivery of the trains and PLN 312,026,400 for a 15-year maintenance and repair package. PKP Intercity financed the project from its own funds and from EU co-financing from the Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme, in the amount of PLN 574,050,400. The vehicles, built at Pesa's Bydgoszcz factory, are designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The first train entered passenger service on 29 December 2015 on the Warsaw–Lublin route; the last of the 20 trains entered service on 20 February 2016, when PKP Intercity took delivery of the entire ordered fleet. The factory had only about a year and a half to build the 20 trains and did not manage to deliver all of them by the contractual deadline of 14 December 2015, which temporarily risked the loss of more than PLN 600 million in EU funds; the situation was resolved with an amendment to the contract.

Significance
The purchase of 20 Pesa Dart ED161 electric multiple units was one of the largest rolling-stock contracts of PKP Intercity in that period and, at the same time, as the manufacturer described it, the most difficult contract in the history of Bydgoszcz-based Pesa, owing to the tight delivery schedule. The new, air-conditioned trains with a maximum speed of 160 km/h were deployed, among other routes, on the lines from Warsaw to Lublin and Białystok, where significant increases in passenger numbers were recorded. The contract, co-financed from the EU Cohesion Fund, also covered 15 years of maintenance and repairs of the rolling stock by the manufacturer.
