Construction of a new Southern Quarter as part of the Żelazny Most Mining Waste Disposal Facility (OUOW) – the largest tailings storage facility in Europe, owned by KGHM Polska Miedź. The expansion included preparatory works and the construction of dams surrounding the new quarter and was intended to ensure continuity of depositing waste from KGHM's mining and metallurgical chain for years to come. The investment was carried out by Budimex, and the facility was officially opened at the turn of 2021, seven months ahead of schedule despite the pandemic.

Significance

The expansion secures the continuity of depositing approx. 30 million tonnes of tailings per year, which is crucial for the uninterrupted operation of KGHM's entire mining and metallurgical chain. Together with the newly added Southern Quarter, the facility covers more than 2,000 ha, remaining the largest storage facility of its kind in Europe. A new method of building dams on the outside of the quarter was applied, intended to improve safety and environmental protection in the region of the Legnica-Głogów Copper District.
