The S22 expressway is a 50.6 km route connecting the Elbląg-Wschód interchange (junction with the S7) with the Grzechotki–Mamonowo border crossing on the state border with Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast). It was built in 2006–2008 as a result of rebuilding the former national road No. 22 to expressway standard, carried out by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) in three implementation sections. The works were carried out by consortia involving, among others, Strabag, Skanska, Warbud, and the Portuguese firms MSF and Teodoro Gomes Alho. Construction works began in 2006, and on 24 September 2008 the entire S22 road was brought into use. According to GDDKiA, the value of the project was PLN 480.3 million; the project was co-financed from European Union funds under the Sectoral Operational Programme Transport (SOP-T). For the related scope, valued at PLN 456,693,086.09, the EU share was given as PLN 323,921,847.82. The route has a single-carriageway cross-section (2/1) with land reserved for a second carriageway. The Grzechotki–Mamonowo border crossing, to which the S22 leads, opened on 3 December 2010.

Significance

The S22 expressway forms the final fragment of the road corridor running from the junction with the S7 expressway near Elbląg to the border crossing with Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast) at Grzechotki. The rebuilding of the former national road No. 22 to expressway standard along the 50.6 km section, completed in 2008, improved accessibility to the Grzechotki–Mamonowo border road crossing, opened in December 2010. The route was built as a single carriageway with land reserved for a second carriageway.
