An approximately 40-kilometre stretch of the S7 expressway through Żuławy Wiślane (the Vistula delta lowlands), connecting Koszwały near Gdańsk with Kazimierzowo near Elbląg, opened to traffic on 31 October 2018. The project by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) was carried out in two sections: Koszwały – Nowy Dwór Gdański (approximately 20.5 km), built by Metrostav a.s. for PLN 1.642 billion, and Nowy Dwór Gdański – Kazimierzowo (approximately 19.1 km), built by Budimex SA for PLN 1.576 billion. Contracts with the two contractors were signed on 9 October 2015, and the combined value of both contracts was approximately PLN 3.2 billion gross. The dual-carriageway route (two lanes plus a hard shoulder in each direction) was built on difficult Żuławy ground with substantial layers of non-load-bearing soil; its features include a viaduct over the Vistula at Kiezmark and a crossing over the Nogat. The project was co-financed from European Union funds.

Significance

The opening of the Koszwały – Kazimierzowo S7 section completed the expressway connection between the Tricity and Elbląg through Żuławy Wiślane, taking transit traffic off the former national road no. 7 and shortening travel times in the north-south (S7) corridor. The route forms part of one of the most important road corridors in Poland, connecting Gdańsk with Warsaw and, further on, with Kraków.
