Volkswagen Group's diesel engine plant in Polkowice, Lower Silesia, was one of the largest foreign direct investments made in the 1990s in the sub-zone of the Legnica Special Economic Zone. The company Volkswagen Motor Polska was established on 13 May 1998, and the foundation stone for the plant was laid on 16 September 1998. The plant was officially opened on 25 August 1999 by Dr Ferdinand Piëch, then Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. The plant initially produced 1.9 TDI diesel engines with pump-injection units; by the end of 2001 capital expenditure had reached approximately EUR 250 million, the company employed 800 people and produced 540,000 engines a year. In subsequent years the plant expanded further (common rail engines from 2008, EURO 6-compliant MDB modular engines from 2013), supplying the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda brands; total investment in the Polkowice plant was estimated at approximately EUR 370 million (as of 2020). The plant is owned by Volkswagen Motor Polska Sp. z o.o., part of the Volkswagen AG group.

Significance

The Volkswagen engine plant in Polkowice was one of the largest foreign direct investments made in the 1990s in the sub-zone of the Legnica Special Economic Zone, and a major employer in Lower Silesia. The plant supplies diesel engines to Volkswagen Group brands (Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Škoda); in December 2016 it produced its 10 millionth engine, and in 2023, to mark the company's 25th anniversary, its 14 millionth engine.
