Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment in Łódź (Cohesion Fund Project 2004-2006)
“Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment in Łódź” is a water and wastewater management project carried out by the City of Łódź and co-financed by the European Union's Cohesion Fund under the 2004-2006 perspective. The total value of the project was PLN 711,784,326.17, including EU co-financing of PLN 303,453,485.40. The project continued work begun under the project “Wastewater Treatment in Łódź (Phase I)”, started in 2001 under the pre-accession ISPA fund. The aim was to put the water and wastewater management of the Łódź agglomeration in order, leading to an improved standard of living for residents, better quality of water supplied to residents, and an improved technical condition of the network. The scope covered modernisation and renewal investments in the water supply systems and distribution network in Łódź, modernisation of the oldest part of the city's sewerage system to protect rivers from the discharge of untreated wastewater, and the extension of the water supply network (64 km), sanitary sewerage (169 km) and stormwater sewerage (93 km), as well as the improvement of approximately 100 km of unpaved road surfaces. Wastewater from the agglomeration is received by the Grupowa Oczyszczalnia Ścieków Łódzkiej Aglomeracji Miejskiej (the Łódź Agglomeration Group Wastewater Treatment Plant), the largest wastewater treatment plant of its type in Poland.

Significance
The project was one of the largest water and wastewater management undertakings in Poland financed from the Cohesion Fund under the 2004-2006 perspective (total value PLN 711.8 million, EU co-financing PLN 303.5 million). It covered the modernisation and extension of the water supply network and of sanitary and stormwater sewerage in the Łódź agglomeration, helping to reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater into rivers and to improve the quality of water supplied to residents. Wastewater from the agglomeration flows to the Grupowa Oczyszczalnia Ścieków Łódzkiej Aglomeracji Miejskiej, the largest wastewater treatment plant of its type in Poland.
