EFRA Project (Effective Refining) – Delayed Coking Complex, Grupa LOTOS Refinery in Gdańsk
The EFRA Project (Effective Refining) is a strategic investment by Grupa LOTOS S.A. and its subsidiary LOTOS Asfalt Sp. z o.o., carried out in 2015–2019 at the refinery in Gdańsk (Pomorskie voivodeship). The cost of the project, implemented in 2015–2019, was approximately PLN 2.3 billion. The foundation stone for the construction was laid in October 2015, and construction work on the main installations began in 2016. The heart of the investment is the Delayed Coker Unit (DCU), together with accompanying installations, including a hydrogen generation unit (HGU) and coker naphtha hydrodesulphurisation. The coking complex reached the Ready for Start-Up phase in the first half of 2019, with full load planned for the fourth quarter of 2019; formal completion of the project was confirmed in 2019. Thanks to EFRA, the refinery solved the problem of effectively utilising the heavy residue from crude oil processing, increasing the conversion depth and producing additional fuels and coke from it. The investment enables the production of an additional approximately 900,000 tonnes per year of high-margin fuels (mainly diesel and jet fuel) and approximately 300,000 tonnes of coke.

Significance
The EFRA Project was one of Grupa LOTOS's largest industrial investments and significantly increased the crude oil conversion depth at the Gdańsk refinery. The delayed coking unit made it possible to utilise the heavy vacuum residue, converting it into an additional approximately 900,000 tonnes per year of high-margin fuels (mainly diesel and jet fuel) and approximately 300,000 tonnes of coke. The investment raised the group's refining margin and formed part of the refinery's technological modernisation process, which had begun with the earlier Programme 10+.
