Reconstruction and expansion of the passenger terminal at John Paul II International Airport Kraków-Balice, the second-busiest airport in Poland, carried out between 2013 and 2016. The works, which began on 11 April 2013 with the handover of the site to the general contractor, the Italian firm Astaldi S.p.A., included the construction of a new part of the terminal (about 33,000 m² of usable floor space, known as T4) and the reconstruction of the existing building, so that the terminal's total usable floor area grew to about 55,000 m² and its capacity to about 8 million passengers a year. The contract with Astaldi was worth PLN 368.88 million gross, while the total investment cost, including the baggage handling and control system and security screening equipment, was estimated at about PLN 412–415 million gross. The newly built part of the terminal was put into use on 28 September 2015, and phase II (the section linking the old and new buildings, and the renovation of the former baggage hall) was completed in July 2016, shortly before World Youth Day. Completion of the works had originally been planned for the end of March 2015, but the investment was delivered with delay. The airport is managed by Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy im. Jana Pawła II Kraków-Balice sp. z o.o., part of the PPL (Polish Airports) Capital Group.

Significance

The expansion significantly increased the capacity of Poland's second-largest airport, and largest regional airport, raising the terminal's total usable floor area to about 55,000 m² and its capacity to about 8 million passengers a year. The new terminal was delivered partly to handle increased traffic ahead of World Youth Day 2016 in Kraków. The distinctive glass form of the new part of the terminal (designed by APA Czech Duliński Wróbel) became a new landmark of the Balice airport.
