The Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway is a newly built suburban railway line connecting Gdańsk Wrzeszcz with Lech Wałęsa Airport and with railway line no. 201 towards Kartuzy and Kościerzyna, partly following the route of the former Kashubian Railway, closed since 1945. The investor was Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna S.A., a company established by the Pomeranian voivodeship self-government. It was the first line in the country built not by PKP but by a voivodeship self-government. The general contractor was the Polish-Spanish consortium of Budimex S.A. (leader) and Ferrovial Agroman S.A. Construction officially began and the founding deed was signed on 1 July 2013, the ceremonial inauguration took place on 30 August 2015, and the line was put into service in September 2015. The length of the line, including the connector towards Kościerzyna, is approximately 19.5 km, with eight stops built along the route. The construction cost was originally estimated at PLN 769.9 million net; the total project value, after including PLN 186.5 million in land value transferred for the investment, came to PLN 907 million net, including PLN 500.9 million in funding from the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme.

Significance

The Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway was the first railway line in Poland built by a voivodeship self-government rather than by PKP, making it a model example of a self-government rail investment. The new line connected Gdańsk with Lech Wałęsa Airport by rail for the first time and revived rail transport in the corridor of the former Kashubian Railway towards Kartuzy and Kościerzyna, closed since 1945. The project was the flagship transport investment of the Pomeranian voivodeship self-government and an important element of the transport system of the Tricity (Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot) agglomeration.
