Poznań Fast Tram (PST), northern trunk (“Pestka”)
The Poznań Fast Tram (PST), colloquially known as “Pestka”, was the first premetro-type fast tram line in Poland: a fully segregated, grade-separated track running from the city centre (Most Teatralny) to the northern district of Piątkowo (Jana III Sobieskiego estate). The original northern-trunk corridor was approximately 6.1 km long with 6 stops. The preparatory phase began in 1980, and actual construction started in 1982; owing to a lack of funding, the works progressed very slowly and took more than ten years in total. The inaugural tram ran on the route on 30 January 1997, and on 1 February 1997 regular daily service began on three lines. The general designer was a team led by Dr Eng. Zygmunt Nowak (Poznańskie Biuro Projektów Dróg i Mostów, Transprojekt), and a total of 86 contractors worked on the construction. The route is operated by the Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne w Poznaniu (MPK Poznań, the Poznań municipal transport company). In 2013 the route was extended by a section to Dworzec Zachodni (outside the scope of this record, which covers the 1997 northern trunk).

Significance
The Poznań Fast Tram was the first line of this type (premetro) in Poland: a compromise between a metro and a conventional tram, with a fully segregated, grade-separated track. The route is of central importance to transport in the centre and northern part of Poznań, connecting the densely populated Piątkowo district with the city centre. It became a model example in the country of urban rail transport with parameters close to those of a light metro.
