Purchase of 20 eight-car Stadler FLIRT3 electric multiple units (designated ED160 in Poland) by PKP Intercity. On 18 November 2013, PKP Intercity signed contracts with the consortium selected in the tender, Stadler Polska Sp. z o.o. and NEWAG S.A. The contract covered the delivery of 20 FLIRT trains and their servicing for a minimum period of 15 years. The value of the contract was PLN 1,621 million, of which PLN 672 million came from EU funds; the delivery of the 20 trains alone was valued at approximately PLN 1,156 million gross. The trains were assembled, among other places, at the Stadler Polska plant in Siedlce, with the involvement of the NEWAG company from Nowy Sącz. Each train is approximately 150 m long, weighs approximately 300 tonnes, offers 360 seats (300 in second class and 60 in first class), and has a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The units entered service with the introduction of the new timetable on 13 December 2015.

Significance

The purchase of 20 FLIRT (ED160) trains was one of the largest rolling-stock contracts of PKP Intercity in this period and significantly renewed the carrier's fleet, introducing modern, air-conditioned trains with a maximum speed of 160 km/h on interregional InterCity connections. The contract, largely co-financed from EU funds (PLN 672 million out of a total PLN 1,621 million), also covered servicing of the rolling stock for at least 15 years, ensuring long-term fleet maintenance. Fulfilment of the order also strengthened domestic production capacity: the trains were built with the involvement of the Stadler Polska plant in Siedlce and the NEWAG company from Nowy Sącz.
