Upgrade of national road no. 8 to S8 expressway standard on a 24.5 km section from the Jeżewo interchange to Białystok (to the Choroszcz interchange) in the Podlaskie voivodeship. The project by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) was carried out under a 'design and build' formula by the consortium of Mota-Engil Polska S.A., Strabag sp. z o.o. and Transprojekt Gdańsk. The construction works contract was worth PLN 675 million, and the total project cost (including land purchases, documentation and archaeological works) reached PLN 900 million, of which PLN 528 million came from co-financing under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. Construction started on 20 October 2010, and the section, with two carriageways of two lanes each way and the Jeżewo, Rzędziany, Tykocin and Choroszcz interchanges, was opened to traffic on 12 September 2012. It was the largest road project in the Podlaskie region.

Significance

The opening of the 24.5 km Jeżewo – Białystok S8 section to traffic on 12 September 2012 significantly improved the connection between Białystok, the whole Podlaskie region and central Poland, creating a direct dual-carriageway, expressway-standard connection along national road no. 8 (Warsaw – Białystok). The project, described as the largest road investment in the Podlaskie region, took transit traffic out of neighbouring towns thanks to the Jeżewo, Rzędziany, Tykocin and Choroszcz interchanges.
