Construction of the S8 expressway on the section from the Walichnowy (Wieluń) interchange to the Łódź Południe (A1) interchange, carried out by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) in the Wrocław – Łódź direction. The main expressway section is 104.07 km long; the project delivered a total of 113–114 km of dual-carriageway expressway divided into nine construction sections. The co-financing agreement was signed on 31 August 2012, with the project completion deadline set at 31 December 2015. The individual sections were opened to traffic in stages in 2013–2014; the last section, connecting Sieradz with Łask, opened on 29 November 2014. The total project value was PLN 5,099,462,890, of which the maximum EU co-financing amount (European Regional Development Fund, Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007–2013) was PLN 3,418,062,388. The construction cost of the nine sections alone exceeded PLN 4.5 billion, and the last section (Sieradz – Łask) was built by the Dragados – Pol Aqua consortium.

Significance

The opening of the Walichnowy interchange – Łódź (A1) S8 section to traffic shortened the journey from Wrocław to Łódź from as much as 5 hours (through numerous towns) to around 2 hours, completing the expressway connection between these two agglomerations. With a main route length of 104 km, nine construction sections and a total value exceeding PLN 5 billion, it was one of the largest road projects carried out in Poland under the EU's 2007–2013 financial perspective.
