Tramwaj Plus was a Wrocław programme for developing fast tram services, carried out by the Municipality of Wrocław as the EU project 'Integrated Rail Transport System in the Agglomeration and in Wrocław – Stage I', co-financed from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. The total value of the Stage I project was PLN 736,189,291.52, of which EU co-financing accounted for PLN 477,747,653.84; the co-financing agreement (POIS.07.03.00-00-006/10-00) was signed on 6 March 2012, and the implementation period covered 2006–2013. Earlier, in 2007, the cost of the programme's tasks was estimated in the media at approximately PLN 700 million, and in 2008 (including the purchase of rolling stock) at approximately PLN 800 million; the investment was carried out by the municipal company Wrocławskie Inwestycje sp. z o.o. The project built 5.3 km of new track and rebuilt 37.85 km of existing track, and purchased 39 low-floor rolling stock units, including bidirectional Škoda 19T trams serving lines 31, 32 and 33, which were marked with the 'PLUS' suffix. Ahead of the Euro 2012 finals, the new tracks connected the Gaj and Kozanów housing estates with the city centre: the Gaj branch was put into service on 11 September 2011, and the line to Kozanów (with branches to Kozanów and Stadion Wrocław) on 31 March 2012. The plans for tram priority (an ITS system) were not fully implemented, and on 17 February 2014 the 'PLUS' suffix was removed from the markings of lines 31, 32 and 33. The infrastructure built remains in operation as part of Wrocław's tram network.

Significance

Tramwaj Plus was one of the largest urban transport development projects in Wrocław during preparations for Euro 2012, and it introduced to the city, for the first time, the concept of fast tram lines given their own designation and served by new, bidirectional rolling stock. The new tracks permanently connected the large Gaj and Kozanów housing estates with the city centre. At the same time, the programme showed the limits of the solutions available at the time: the ITS priority system did not work as intended, and the promise of noticeably faster journeys was not kept, which led to the removal of the 'PLUS' brand from lines 31, 32 and 33 in February 2014. The infrastructure built nonetheless remains in operation as part of Wrocław's tram network.
